Mavis Tech

Part-time, 2 days per week · On-site, Northampton · £31,000–£44,000 FTE pro-rata, depending on experience

About us

Mavis Technologies designs and manufactures AI-powered smart glasses, Mavis Viaro and Mavis Itero, that help blind and visually impaired people read, recognise their surroundings and live more independently. We build our products in our own facility at Vulcan Works, Northampton.

The role

We are looking for an experienced SMT assembly specialist to join our production team two days a week. You will work hands-on on our line, run production builds, and supervise and mentor our junior engineers and technicians so the team can run the line confidently and to a high standard.

Our SMT line

  • AMS MEGA stencil printer
  • Neoden K1830 pick-and-place
  • Neoden IN12 reflow oven
  • PCB handling and inspection equipment

We build compact, double-sided boards for wearables, with fine-pitch QFN/DFN packages, 0402 passives, ESP32 modules and FPC connectors, in small, high-mix batches.

What you will do

  • Run SMT production builds alongside our team
  • Supervise, train and mentor junior engineers in good SMT practice
  • Set up and optimise jobs: pick-and-place programming, feeders, component libraries, fiducials
  • Solder paste printing, stencil setup and inspection
  • Reflow profiling for lead-free assembly
  • Inspect boards to IPC-A-610, find the root causes of defects and carry out rework
  • Write clear work instructions and checklists so builds are repeatable
  • Recommend improvements to our process, tools and consumables

What we are looking for

  • Several years of hands-on SMT assembly or process engineering experience
  • Pick-and-place programming and setup (Neoden experience is a big plus)
  • Reflow profiling and stencil printing
  • Confident with fine-pitch components (QFN, 0402) and rework
  • Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 / J-STD-001
  • Experience training or supervising others, with patience and clear communication

Nice to have

  • AOI programming
  • Small-batch, high-mix production experience
  • Consumer electronics or medical device background

Location and eligibility

On-site at Vulcan Works, Northampton. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship.
