Mavis Technologies is delighted to announce that Mavis Itero – Study Edition has been approved by Student Finance England and the Student Loans Company for funding through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). This means that, for the first time, blind and partially sighted students in England can be recommended Mavis smart glasses by their DSA Needs Assessor as part of their study support. Itero – Study Edition is now being added to the SLC’s approved product catalogue and will be available to order through the DSA delivery partners, Capita and Study Tech. Itero – Study Edition is a wearable assistive technology designed with and for people with sight loss. It gives students hands-free access to printed and on-screen text, recognises objects and people, describes surroundings, supports navigation around campus and provides AI-powered assistance, all through discreet, lightweight glasses. With a longer battery life and features tailored for study, it is built for a full day of lectures, libraries and independent living. “Getting DSA approval is a milestone for Mavis and, more importantly, for the students who will use Itero. We set out to bring the most up-to-date assistive technology into a wearable format at a price point that offers real value. Approval of a product means it can be recommended by a Needs Assessor; each award depends on Student Finance England being satisfied that it meets an essential need arising from the student’s disability.
At Mavis Technologies, our smart glasses bring together three capabilities that work in combination to help blind and partially sighted users navigate and understand their surroundings with greater confidence: obstacle detection, object recognition and scene description. Obstacle detection alerts the wearer to objects and changes in terrain in their path. Object recognition identifies items around them, while scene description provides a spoken summary of what is in view. Used together, these features give users a fuller, real-time understanding of their environment.
Mavis Technologies has introduced Face Recognition, a new feature designed to make social interactions more natural, accessible and confident for blind and partially sighted users. With Mavis Glasses, users can register familiar people and have their names announced automatically when they come into view. Registering a face is simple — a spoken command such as “Add new face” or “Register a face” guides the user through capturing clear photos and saving the person’s name. Once enabled, recognised people are announced by name as part of the glasses’ scene descriptions, helping users identify familiar faces naturally. Users can also ask at any time, “Who is in front of me?”, or enable continuous recognition for a fully hands-free experience.

At Mavis Tech, security is not an afterthought — it is built in. Every pair of our smart glasses uses VPN encryption for all data transmitted between the glasses and our servers. That means whatever you are doing and however you are connected, the information passing between your Mavis Glasses and our systems is encrypted and protected. Privacy and data security are core parts of how the product is designed.
Mavis Technologies is growing, and we are taking on two Customer Support Interns to join our small team in Northampton. These roles are open specifically to blind and partially sighted individuals. As a Customer Support Intern you would help our users get the most from their Mavis Glasses, gaining hands-on experience with assistive technology at a fast-moving UK start-up. What a day at Sight Village Birmingham! Our team was at the centre of the action from start to finish, and it was non-stop throughout. So many people stopped by our stand to try the Mavis Glasses, and we did our best to make sure everyone got their turn. Events like Sight Village are a brilliant opportunity to meet the community we build for, hear feedback first-hand, and show what our smart glasses can do.
